Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. A bloody good read with some very sound advice.
I have no idea how you gathered the information; although some I recognise, but if you don’t mind it’s going in hard copy on my wall.
Thanks again. The Baldchemist

The Baldchemist said in March 3rd, 2008 at 12:34 am

I suppose the 101st writing tip is to finish what you started? ;)

John Pageless said in March 3rd, 2008 at 4:25 am

John, it might be 101 meaning introductory. Like Math 101 or Philosophy 101. Though I’m inclined to side with you, considering the 100 tips. :)

Excellent, that was informative, comprehensive, and hilarious.

You forgot one, though.

102. Even these rules are made to be broken.

ender216 said in March 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Where’s the last 101 tip? o_O

Anonymous said in March 10th, 2008 at 4:40 am

Point 7 - ‘incitefully’??
I think you mean ‘insightfully’, although still not sure it’s a word.
You incite someone to riot.
You show insight when you, well, I’m sure you can work it out form here.

doctored said in March 10th, 2008 at 10:39 am

Oh, unless that was the point of the point… (I use ellipses far too much.)

doctored said in March 10th, 2008 at 10:40 am

Well, well, well…aren’t we a witty little douchebag!

You have sterilized the technique of writing, which should develop with an individual’s personality.

Sure, it was a cute - but what if Joyce had followed all of these rules?

Kaleb said in March 10th, 2008 at 12:26 pm

101. Adverbs make sentences read clumsily.

DieSkimmel said in March 10th, 2008 at 2:37 pm

Awesome list. How long did it take you to come up with these tips?

NewLifeFromHeaven said in March 10th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

it is poor writing to casually split an infinitive

Emily said in March 17th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Where is number 101?

Tailz said in March 17th, 2008 at 4:06 am

As a writer just starting this, this may be helpful to me. Maybe not. I usually discard all rules and just write on the fly, but I always check my work after and see what’s worth editing.
Thanks again for the tips. If they don’t help me, they’ll help others.

ShiroChen said in March 18th, 2008 at 2:42 pm

Spellcheckers are not perfect; they can kiss my errs.

*just starting out. This is helpful already. Don’t relie on red underlines to tell you where your mistakes are.

ShiroChen said in March 18th, 2008 at 2:44 pm

Congradulations! I found your suggestions to be revelant and affective. Irregardless, them there hints supposably will help me write really right.

One thing tho: I really wish you would of explored incomplete sentences in such a way as to

Julie O'Malley said in March 22nd, 2008 at 2:58 am

How about: Eschew obfuscation.
Also: Never use a preposition to end a sentence with.

Sr. Andrew said in March 22nd, 2008 at 5:23 pm

These are very funny. And in response to Sr. Andrew: “What did you use a preposition to end that sentence up with for?”

This made me laugh so hard. Thank you.

kim said in March 28th, 2008 at 3:41 am

Lol… Nice.. Yet i say suspense is my strongest point in making people enjoy my writing.. But then maybe it due to my slight, sorry, very much lean towards narration and first point view mixed story makes my friends and family truly enjoy my story that they beg me to write another..

Lol.. said in March 28th, 2008 at 6:40 am

I have absolutely nothing to comment. But Web 2.0 makes me fill out every reply-form I stumble upon. Help!

Simply Brilliant! Oh, and number 32 should be printed out onto little stickers, to paste on the foreheads of all who disregard it!

Anonymous said in March 29th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

And gods help anyone who takes any of the others seriously…

Same as the earlier Anonymous said in March 29th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Awesome. had to look up some of the words though. juxtapositions

Anonymous said in March 31st, 2008 at 12:31 am

This is quite brilliant. #65 had me laughing out loud; I absolutely loved that one. Did you come up with all of these on your own? They are very clever.

Anonymous said in April 2nd, 2008 at 10:43 pm

I can’t believe people are actually planning on applying these rules to their own writing. I’m still confused as to whether this was actually intended to be serious advice. This appears to be meant for non-fiction, and yet you advise against MLA format, or “revealing” your sources. Simile is useless? End on an upbeat note? Come to think of it, this must be a joke. And please, before some righteous sophomore jumps on my case: I am aware of the wit at hand here. Absolutely hilarious.

Anonymous said in April 3rd, 2008 at 4:09 am

P.S.: To avoid any confusion, I did use sarcasm there. I know it’s one of the rules, but what can I say? I’m not much of a writer.

I count 99. Those two tips about dangling words really only count as one.

Anonymous said in April 27th, 2008 at 11:52 pm

“Choose your words carefully and incitefully.”

==

Shouldn’t that be “insightfully?”

writingguy said in April 28th, 2008 at 7:35 am

just great.
